Advent Personhood

“We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are LIFE, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

No state shall deprive any person of LIFE, liberty,or property without due process of law, nor deny any PERSON within it’s equal protection of the laws.”  United States Bill of Rights, James Madison, 1789.


Tonight I found myself pondering, what if Mary had not said “yes’? What if Jesus had never been born?

Or Ghandi.

Or Mother Teresa.

Or any number of other wonderful precious regular folks born into lowly or difficult circumstances, who overcame and made a difference in this world, big or small.

What about you? Just you. Remember when you stopped and gave that homeless guy five bucks, caused him to smile and renewed his hope? Or the time you drove for hours to stay with a friend who was in a very dark place, until she could see daylight again? Or asked your friend if she needed anything when she was ill?

Just like Bob Crachit and Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol” or George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life”, what if YOU hadn’t been there? You may have thought through this before, or not, but what if the only reason we were born was to do something good for one person or touch someone’s life? To be a thread in the tapestry at that moment and add to the whole good, a little touch of light in the world?
